According to the Global Health Security Index, there are significant gaps in countries’ pandemic preparedness capabilities. Given the impact of Covid, it is deeply disappointing that national governments are not investing the necessary resources to build life-saving pandemic preparedness capacity. Making matters worse, Congress has made major cuts to pandemic preparedness funding, as part of the ongoing appropriations process. Playing the long game also means supporting the World Bank Pandemic Fund, which is designed to invest in long-term pandemic preparedness capacity of low- and middle-income countries.

CNN —The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) is leveraging the attention on Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-nominated film “Oppenheimer” in an attempt to elevate the conversation about nuclear threat. In the run-up to Sunday night’s Academy Awards, the organization is launching a “Make Nukes History” campaign Wednesday in Los Angeles. “We want to raise our voices to remind people that while Oppenheimer is history, nuclear weapons are not,” the group writes in their letter. And political will is created when people demand it.”Cillian Murphy (as J. Robert Oppenheimer) and writer, director, and producer Christopher Nolan on the set of "Oppenheimer." CNN —Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia has successfully carried out a test of a new generation of nuclear-powered cruise missile. State news agency RIA Novosti quoted Putin as saying the “last successful test of the Burevestnik, a global-range cruise missile with a nuclear installation, a nuclear propulsion system, has been conducted.”Putin was speaking at the Valdai Forum in Sochi. The program to develop the Burevestnik was announced by Putin in March 2018 as part of a broader initiative to develop a new generation of intercontinental and hypersonic missiles. Among them were the Kinzhal ballistic missile and the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle. “It is a low-flying stealth missile carrying a nuclear warhead, with almost unlimited range, unpredictable trajectory and ability to bypass interception boundaries,” Putin said then.
